  • 1958: Julius trademarks his invention as "Wet-Nap."

  • 1960: Julius presents his wipes to the public at the National Restaurant Show in Chicago, after perfecting the production machine with the help of a mechanic.

  • 1963: Julius sells his Wet-Nap wipes to Colonel Harland Sanders for use in his Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants.

  • 1970s: Advances in non-woven materials and production technology make wet wipes more affordable and accessible for mass production.

  • 1970s-1980s: Major brands such as Kimberly-Clark and Procter & Gamble enter the wet wipes market.

  • 1980s: Store-brand baby wipes become available, offering a more affordable option for consumers.

  • 1990s: Supermarket chains begin selling their own brands of wet wipes, increasing competition and driving prices down further.

The global wipes market has grown significantly, reaching over $12 billion in 2012, and is projected to exceed $28 billion in 2028. Wet wipes have become a common household and workplace item, with uses ranging from personal care to cleaning, sanitizing, and polishing.

Wet Wipe Manufacturing Process:

First, the raw materials involved in this process are the following:

  • The nonwoven fabric comes in a roll in this situation, this fabric is usually made from two raw materials, Polyester and Viscos (cotton) and the ratio between these two materials determines the fabric quality.

  • The packaging material in our situation known as flexible packaging comes in a roll shape, this packaging consists of a multi-layer laminated one over one, the material of the layer depends on the job that will be done, for instance, the main job of the inner layer in A-A sealing method that it will melt when the machine applies the heat during the sealing process then the sealing will happen, also there is a layer act as a barrier to prevent the light to reach to the products inside the packet, and of course, the outer layer job is to give the final packet a good and neat shape also as a barrier to preserve all the layer down it. In most popular packaging material combinations used in wet wipe packaging are as the following: PET+PETMET+PE or PAPER+ALU+PE.

  • The solution is a chemical combination that comes in a concentrated shape and is usually extended by water, this combination consists of a lot of materials such as perfume, skin softener, soup, etc.

Second, the manufacturing process of the single-use wet wipes:

The Wet Wipe Packaging Machine shapes the packaging material in 3 or 4 side sachet, at the same time the nonwoven fabric the machine makes first folds and then cuts at the desired length depending on the servo motor and machine program, then again it folds the wipe and inserts it inside the upper side open sachet alongside the solution, then the upper sealing jaw seals the sachet and at the final stage, the scissor cut the sachet from the film and the 4 sides sealed wet wipe sachets fall to the secondary packaging which is usually a cartoon box.
